Episode 66

The Gray Rock and Fogged Mirror Methods (Rough Cut)

Rough Cut Recording!

Ever feel like certain people thrive on draining your energy, prying into your life, or stirring up drama? Maybe you’ve heard of the Gray Rock Method (Skyler, 2012), and today, I’m introducing something similar - The Fogged Mirror Method. This is all about being unreadable, vague, and emotionally untouchable, plus redirection, so toxic people lose interest and move on.

In this episode, we’ll cover:

✅ What the Fogged Mirror Method is and how it works

✅ Real-life examples of how to use it in awkward, toxic, or manipulative situations

✅ Why it frustrates energy-drainers and keeps your peace intact

✅ When to use it and when NOT to

If you’re tired of getting pulled into other people’s stress and drama, this episode is for YOU. Let’s learn how to set boundaries like a pro safely.

Listen now and take back your emotional energy!

🛑 Using the Gray Rock Method:

👤 Co-Worker: “I heard you had a big meeting with the boss today. What happened?”

🧍‍♀️ You: “It was fine.”

👤 Co-Worker: “Come on, give me details! What did they say?”

🧍‍♀️ You: “Nothing special.”

👤 Co-Worker: “You’re no fun.” (Walks away, annoyed.)

💡 Effect: The co-worker loses interest because you’re giving zero emotional engagement.

🌀 Using the Fogged Mirror Method:

👤 Co-Worker: “I heard you had a big meeting with the boss today. What happened?”

😶‍🌫️ You: “Oh, you know how those meetings go—same old, same old.”

👤 Co-Worker: “Wait, what do you mean? Was it good or bad?”

😶‍🌫️ You: “It was… interesting. Hard to explain, really.”

👤 Co-Worker: “Okay… I guess.” (Looks confused, changes the subject.)

💡 Effect: The co-worker gets no real info but stays too uncertain to push further.

Dealing with a Toxic Family Member Who Wants Drama

🛑 Using the Gray Rock Method:

👤 Toxic Relative: “So, are you STILL dating that person? I never liked them.”

🧍‍♀️ You: “Yeah.”

👤 Toxic Relative: “I don’t know why you waste your time.”

🧍‍♀️ You: “Okay.”

👤 Toxic Relative: (Getting annoyed) “Wow, no response? Fine, be that way.”

💡 Effect: They get frustrated because you’re refusing to engage.

🌀 Using the Fogged Mirror Method:

👤 Toxic Relative: “So, are you STILL dating that person? I never liked them.”

😶‍🌫️ You: “Oh, relationships are always interesting, aren’t they?”

👤 Toxic Relative: “Uh, what? Are you saying you agree with me?”

😶‍🌫️ You: “Oh, you know, people have all kinds of opinions.” (Shrugs, smiles slightly.)

👤 Toxic Relative: (Frowns, clearly confused) “Well, okay then.” (Gives up.)

💡 Effect: They can’t tell if you agree or disagree, so they drop the topic out of frustration.

Hello and welcome!
I’m Meredith - author, podcast host, and someone who’s spent years navigating the highs and lows of personal growth, self-esteem, and setting boundaries. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that resilience isn’t just a buzzword - it’s a necessity.
Whether dealing with wild workplace dynamics (looking at you, retail world!) or managing the overwhelming mental load of just being human, I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to stay grounded, set boundaries, and keep my sanity intact. It’s not about getting it perfect; it’s about making progress.
And that’s exactly why Anxiety Makes Me Poop exists - to have real, honest conversations about the stuff we all deal with, but don’t always talk about. From overthinking everything to finding ways to laugh through the chaos, we’re here to remind you that you’re not alone.
So, thank you for listening, for laughing with us a little, and for being part of this community. We appreciate you more than you know! 💛🎙️✨
